A glimpse into the design process

In designing custom pieces, there are several ways we can work with you. (I use the word ring(s) for convenience here, I really mean any piece you are interested in, pins, pendants, earrings, bracelets, etc.) No matter what method you choose, there are some basic pieces of information we need from you: metal(s), dimensions, size of stone(s), date you need the finished piece(s), budget (a most important element to see if we can do what you want and/or to keep us from going in the wrong direction(s), and a rough idea of ring size.

1. You don't know how you want the ring(s) to look, but you have a feeling you want portrayed or a certain element involved. You explain this to us, and we come up with some ideas.

2. You have a sketch/drawing of what you would like the rings to look like--either rough or very exact. We then either produce a wax based on your specifications or a modification of your drawing.

3. You choose one of the rings or parts of rings shown on our web site, and we modify it. Nearly anything about a ring can be changed: the metal(s), the stone kind, shape and size, scaled up or down, different surface finish or inlay design, putting elements of different rings together.

One of the set of rings we created

We frequently create a working sketch based on the original description
and discussion of what someone is looking for. If the piece will be a casting I will carve a wax model

and send it to our customers to see and to make sure we're on the same track.
This is a good time to make any fine tuning adjustments to the design or occassionally to realize that what was in the mind
is not quite as nice once on the hand - and we start over.

The original sketch we sent for approval of the design

This ring was created by drilling and sawing the design
out of two separate sheets of gold. These pieces were further detailed using
files, gravers and burs. Dragonflies were gold soldered onto the band and the
whole thing was rounded on a steel mandrel, sized, soldered and polished.

NEED HELP Figuring it all out?

If you don't already have in mind the rings you want, here are some suggestions to help you figure it out. Some ideas are more basic than others, some are more concrete. Don't get bogged down. If something doesn't feel right, skip it and move on.

  • Think of descriptive words--what each of you want the ring(s) to look like or feel like. Examples: flowing, substantial, light, symbolic (of what?), peaceful, airy, exciting, traditional, abstract, representational (flowers, hands, ocean), etc.
  • Do you want identical rings? Similar rings? Two different rings?
  • What metals do you want to use: platinum, 14kt or 18kt gold - yellow, white, rose, sterling silver, a combination of metals?
  • Do you want gem stones? How many? Which one(s)? What kind (faceted, cabochon)? How do you want them set - prong, channel, bezel? Do you want an inlay?
  • How wide or narrow do you want the ring? How thick?
  • Do you want a flat band or a rounded one? Comfort fit (rounded on the inner surface)
  • What is your budget range?
  • How soon do you need your rings?

If you had, or now have a good idea of what you want and can describe it or make a drawing of it (even a rough drawing is fine), great. Send it to us by email or mail, along with any other pertinent information so we can discuss it with you. Still don't have a picture and/or a clear idea of what you want? Give us a call at 541-896-9841 and we'll go from there.

  • What item you are interested in
  • What metal(s) i.e. 14kt, 18kt, yellow gold, rose gold, etc
  • What stone(s) and/or inlays
  • What finger size
  • If you are ordering for a special occasion let us know the date you would like it by.
We will let you know whether we can meet the date.
  • Name
  • Mailing address
  • Phone and/or e-mail

We are happy to provide simple price quotes or estimates, free of charge, based on information or drawings that you provide. For designs requiring elaborate renderings or multiple models a non-refundable custom fee of $150.00 may be required.

Please be sure that the design/specifications we come up with together and the choices you have made are to your satisfaction. You will have the opportunity to see your design in sketch or wax form, depending on the process that will be used to make your ring. This is the time to make modifications, if necessary.

TIME LINE From the time of deposit, which puts your order on our production list, our turn around time is approximately 8 - 12 weeks. If you have a time sensitive order, please let us know. Frequently we are able to work rush orders in, there will be an additional $50.00 rush fee for any order under four weeks.

Shipping We ship using UPS and fully insure each parcel. The package must be signed for in order for our insurance to cover your order. We also need a phone number at that location (or a cell phone number). Shipping/insurance fees are $20. for 2 day delivery and $25. for overnight, within the U.S. There may be an additional insurance charge for high price items as well as international deliveries. Someone will need to sign for the package in person in order for UPS to release it.

Return Policy We do EVERYTHING possible to make sure that the people who wear our jewelry love it. We do not want people to be unhappy with anything we have made. Please bear in mind that we do not have a store and do not carry inventory - every ring, even our standard designs is made specifically for you. We love helping with surprises but please be reasonably certain the recipient will be happy with your selection. If you are unsure we strongly recommend bringing them into the process of choosing before commissioning us to make something. We would much rather work with you to get it right before creating the ring than have to revise or replace or refund afterwards.

Keep in mind that because every item is made to order for you by hand, there may be some slight variations in finished pieces. Also, because the pieces are hand made and unique they may not appear as uniform as what you would find in most jewelry stores where things are mass / machine produced. For items involving expensive stones or an extensive stone search, we will ship the stone(s) to you for your approval. We are a small business and as such can not afford to keep expensive stones on hand that might not meet someone else's requirements for years to come. Therefore, once you have approved and we have purchased the stone(s)for you, the stone(s) are yours and they are non-refundable. If when you receive your order you are not completely happy with the design, you must notify us within 14 days of receipt. we will make every effort to modify/rework the piece to your satisfaction. Depending on what that entails, there may be fees involved. If we can't reach an agreement (in 20 years of business this has happened maybe 5 times) we will refund 70% of the purchase price of the ring, excluding stones, shipping, insurance and any rush fees involved. If there is a problem with the ring (loss of stone, break of metal, etc.) due to no fault of yours, we will repair it at not further cost except shipping/insurance. Please contact us before shipping it to us to make sure we will be here to accept it and so we can look out for your package.

How to size your finger
Getting the right size is crucial. We strongly suggest you visit a local jeweler and try on their standard ring sizing sets. They should have two different sets, a narrow and a wide set. Please give us both sizes for your finger, one from the wide and one from the narrow measurement. Ring sizing sets are measured in half sizes, but we can make your ring to a quarter size if desired. Ring sizing sets are measured in half sizes but we can make rings in quarter sizes. When you are trying on rings for size bear in mind whether your hands are in a thicker, thinner or normal state for you at the time. (e.g. cold hands are usually a bit smaller than hot hands). In most cases it is easier to size a ring up a little bit after it is made. Some rings cannot be sized down later without risk of damage to set stones or other components of the ring. If in doubt please discuss your concerns with us before ordering a specific size. Surprise sizes; if you are buying a ring for someone whose size you do not know, please do everything you can to find out their size - put one of their rings (approximately the same width as the one you are ordering for them) on your finger and if it fits, have your finger sized. "Borrow" a ring of theirs and take it to a jeweler to size it. There is a minimum charge of $50.00 to resize a ring that you " guessed" on the size of, assuming it is possible to resize. Some rings are not resizable.

Hope to hear from you soon,
